Ponies and miniature horses differ in size, appearance, and lifespan. A pony measures less than 14.2 hands. Miniature horses are commonly measured in inches not hands and are no more than 38 inches tall.
Male horse foals are called colts. Females are fillies.
Did you know horses sleep standing up and lying down. Horses must lie down for 30 minutes a day in order to achieve a full restorative sleep cycle.
While you can't tell the exact age of a horse by their teeth, you can estimate their age. Horses need proper equine dental care for their teeth, but sometimes a horse lives longer than the teeth do, so extra care is needed when feeding senior horses.
Horses are extremely intelligent. A horse can learn human words and remember you even if you’ve been away from each other for a long time, especially if you treated them well. Their memory is comparable to that of elephants. And, like dogs, horses can be trained.
Horses have incredible hearing, with the ability to hear the heartbeat of a human from four feet away. In the wild, horses will synchronize their heartbeats to the other horses in the herd in order to sense danger more quickly, and recent studies have shown that they use those tactics in domesticated life as well. When our horses interact with us, they tend to synchronize to our heartbeats as well, meaning they can sense slight adjustments in our mood.
